Introducing new baby to pet dog?
I don’t think for one second that my dog will harm my baby, i was just wondering how best to go about it. Although the dog does get quite jealous if my husband is paying attention to the cats,
We think we have 2 choices:
1. bring baby home into house while the dog is in the house – introduce them that way.
2. put the dog into kennels for a few days after birth and then bring her home once the baby is already there.
Has anyone experienced this dilema before?
Its best that you keep your dogs routine as normal as possible, so boarding her isn’t an ideal option. Start by slowly introducing baby things that you have bought already i.e toys, clothes, set the pram up and let your dog sniff around it etc. This way your dog will be accustomed to certain baby objects and she will realise there is change happening slowly. While your in hospital get your partner/family to bring home a scented object of the baby such as a babygro, towel, blanket etc, let the dog sniff this or even have it in her bed for the duration your in hospital. This gives her time to get used to the new smell of your baby, and when you bring the baby home your dog will reconize the pack smell. As hard as it will be, make time for your dog still play with her in the garden, fuss her etc, when she’s showing interest in your baby gently praise her. Take her out on walks still, you can have the baby in the pram aswell, this way your dog will realise that the baby is no threat and that the baby is part of her routine and pack.Good luck with everything.
