What is a good medium breed guard dog?
We have a small house with a big fenced in yard, a 2 year old son, and two cats. Although this will be our first dog, I have worked in animal care for years and understand what goes into dog ownership. I also understand that it is one thing to work around dogs, and another to actually live with a dog.
We want a medium breed (30-50 pounds), who will be good with kids and cats, and have a good guardian instinct. We are not looking for an attack dog, but we also do not want a dog that will welcome strangers into our home.
We currently have an alarm system, and want a dog as a family pet. We just feel better with a dog that would help deter an intruder. I know that every dog is different, and that shelter workers will know temperament of individuals, but it is nice to be informed about breed traits as well.
Olde English Bulldogges. They are medium size and do great with children and other pets. They are WATCH dogs, not guard dogs really. They will let you know when someone is on their property but they won’t necessarily go after them and attack. They will stand their ground to strangers until given the okay by their masters. My fiancee owns one and he is definitely a good watch dog. He won’t let strangers in the house unless he is told to, he stands at the door looking at the person intently. He doesn’t growl at them but he will bark furiously as soon as the touch our property. When the door is opened, he stands there and is given his ’secret’ its okay to let them come in command.
