Experienced “Dog Show” Handlers/Owners (especially those involved in Dobermans) I Need Advice…?
My blue male 2-year-old Doberman Pinscher is getting ready for his 1st show in roughly 3 weeks and I am looking for a few special products to give him that winning look. My handler has really only given me minimal guidance on the subject and I am a complete novice owner, of a “Show Dog”. I’m looking for the perfect grooming product to put that shining like a diamond coat on him. I am also looking for the perfect ring collar/lead combination. What is better to go with a hex or a curb chain (no nylon)? Snap or loop through lead? How long should it be, how thick? Has anyone ever seen a loop through black leather lead? I really need guidance, experienced individuals please HELP!? Direct web address would be great and any other advice or products that are must have. I really appreciate the answers in advance!
I purchased a 18″ Chrome Hex Chain, but I’m not sure about the fit it almost seems like there is too much give when its tighter, but then it barley slides over his head…
I’m not to sure on the look, since whilst I love the breed and show I don’t know much about showing that breed.
As for collars and leads, keep it simple! A short, plain coloured lead, thin enough to hold and not be easily noticed but not so thin as to be uncomfortable to hold.
Personally I prefer to use and see hex chains on show dogs, and for larger breeds I think snap leads are better – usually loop leads are more often seen on small breeds.
You want it long enough so when you are doing triangles, out-and-backs etc your dog has a bit of give to trot, but then not so long as it’s hard to gather up when you need to stack.
Leads are usually nylon, since they are thinner, and any colour will do, and with size and length you should handle a few and decide what suits you best.
From show training which I used to attend when I started showing, we were told that the judge will not want to see flashy leads. They want a basic collar and lead, because they are looking at the dog, and don’t care for what the lead looks like, nor do they want to be distracted by flashy patterns and colours.
My dog has a white nylon collar and black nylon lead for showing (though he’s a Samoyed, and you can’t see the collar at all). That set is old though, and often I’ll borrow some off his breeder, usually a hex chain and green/red nylon lead. My breeder either has hex chains or white nylon collars for her dogs, and her leads are nylon of one colour (purple, green, pink and white for her four usually).
Edit: To be honest, the hex chain I use is the same. It doesn’t fit over his head easily, but it then fits him well and you’ll be surprised how much give it has.
