What breed of hunting dog do i nees?
i want that hunts BOTH waterfowl and upland birds such as pheasant and grouse
Well, there’s probably a lot more things to examine, but I’d say one of the breeds of versatile hunting dogs would be right for you. I believe there are seven that are AKC recognized (meaning they’ll be easier to find). Here’s a list of such breeds from the NAVHDA (see below): Bracco Italiano, Braque D’Auvergne, Braque du Bourbonnais, Braque Francais; Brittany*; Cesky Fousek; Drentse Partridge Dog; English Setter*; French Spaniel; German Longhaired Pointer; German Shorthaired Pointer*; German Wirehaired Pointer*; Gordon Setter*; Irish Red & White Setter; Irish Setter*; Large Munsterlander; Pointer*; Portuguese Pointer; Pudelpointer; Slovensky Hrubosrsty Stavac; Small Munsterlandser; Spinone Italiono*; Stichelhaar; Vizsla*; Weimaraner*; Wirehaired Pointing Griffon*, and Wirehaired Vizsla.
I starred the AKC breeds meaning they’ll probably be easier to find.
All of these breeds may be appropriate for your needs. Since this dog will be living with you, you also need to evaluate your needs in a dog. Do you have a family? Are you OK with a dog that sheds a lot? How much exercise can you give it? etc.
Also, evaluate where and what you will be hunting. Although most are pretty versatile, they were developed for hunting in certain areas. For example, some dogs have better coats for hunting in heavy brush.
