Nigerian Dwarf Goats – I have some questions?
I am interested in getting two 5-6 month old nigerian dwarf goats.
they are wethers & polled.
**What is an average amount of space they need?
I am thinking to build a fenced in area where I will put a 3 sided shelter.
**how big does that have to be?
**can I cover the ground with hay?
I know they have to eat hay off the ground, so I will have a seperate rack of good hay.
There is a park down the road, can I walk them on a leash and collar?
**Can they wear collars?
They would be able to eat grass and stuff.
i know some things are poison.
**what do I do to keep them warm in the winter?
I live in CT so it snows in the winter..
I know I have to give them warm water.
**What are the coats I can buy them called?
**How do I find a livestock vet or whatever?
**What is the basic diet of a weathered male Nigerian Dwarf Goat?
**How do you play with them?
**how do they like to be petted best?
any other info would be greatly appreciated!
**What is an average amount of space they need?
For two Nigis I’d recommend a 20×20 pen. It’d have to be larger if you wanted a large portion of their diet to come from pasture.
**can I cover the ground with hay?
Why would you cover the ground with hay? For bedding? You can put straw or shavings in the shed for bedding. Any hay on the ground they will try to eat and can pick up bacteria and parasites.
There is a park down the road, can I walk them on a leash and collar?
Yep, just have to break them to lead first.
**Can they wear collars?
Yes but make sure there is nothing in their pen the collar can catch on. Otherwise they can hang themselves.
**what do I do to keep them warm in the winter?
Bed the shed down deep with lots of bedding. Feed them lots of hay-digesting it keeps them warm.
**What are the coats I can buy them called?
They shouldn’t need coats unless their winter coat doesn’t come in for some reason.
**How do I find a livestock vet or whatever?
Good luck with that. Not many vets treat goats and the ones who do aren’t very knowledgeable about them typically. Goat people learn to be their own vets. Check with nearby breeders for advice.
**What is the basic diet of a weathered male Nigerian Dwarf Goat?
Good quality grass hay. Very small amount of goat pellets.
